HM and THM interactions in bentonite engineered barriers for nuclear waste disposal

چکیده

Bentonite-based engineered barriers are a key component of many repository designs for the confinement high-level radioactive waste and spent fuel. Given complexity interaction phenomena affecting barrier, coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) numerical analyses potentially useful tool better understanding their behaviour. In this context, Task (INBEB) was undertaken to study, using analyses, Interactions in Bentonite Engineered Barriers within international cooperative project DECOVALEX 2019. Two large scale tests, largely complementary, were selected modelling: EB FEBEX. The experiment carried out under isothermal conditions artificial hydration it dismantled after 10.7 years. FEBEX test temperature-controlled non-isothermal combined with natural that underwent two dismantling operations, partial one 5 years heating final total 18.4 heating. Direct observation state possible during operations so evolution barrier heterogeneity transient could be determined. Four teams performed HM THM variety computer codes, formulations constitutive laws. For each experiment, basic features described comparison between calculations field observations presented discussed. Comparisons involve measurements performance data gathered dismantling. A evaluation modelling closes paper.

Nuclear waste disposal.

-Experiments are described in which dose-response data have been obtained for EMT6 mouse tumour cells growing in vivo and exposed to various cytotoxic agents. A comparison has been made of the response of solid tumours in the flank and of rapidly growing lung nodules. The results are discussed with regard to their cell kinetic implications and compared with our results for the chemosensitivity ...

Effect of thermo-coupled processes on the behaviour of a clay barrier submitted to heating and hydration.

The storage of high level radioactive waste is still an unresolved problem of the nuclear industry, being geological disposal the most favoured option and, naturally, the one requiring the strongest geo-mechanical input. Most conceptual designs for the deep geological disposal of nuclear waste envisage placing the canisters containing the waste in horizontal drifts or vertical boreholes. The em...

Mobile fission and activation products in nuclear waste disposal.

When disposing nuclear waste in clay formations it is expected that the most radiotoxic elements like Pu, Np or Am move only a few centimetres to meters before they decay. Only a few radionuclides are able to reach the biosphere and contribute to their long-term exposure risks, mainly anionic species like I129, Cl36, Se79 and in some cases C14 and Tc99, whatever the scenario considered. The rec...
